The second WHO World Report on the health of refugees and migrants focused on the WHO Global Action Plan has been published

The second  WHO World Report on the health of refugees and migrants, entitled “World report on promoting the health of refugees and migrants: Monitoring progress on the WHO global action plan”, has been published as part of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Special Initiative on Health and Migration.

The document, which follows the first World Report published by the WHO in 2022, represents the first analysis of the implementation, in countries, of the WHO Global Action Plan on promoting the health of refugees and migrants 2019–2030 (GAP) and is based on the results of the first WHO Global Survey on Health and Migration, in which 93 Member States from all six WHO Regions (Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Pacific and South-East Asia) participated, as well as on case studies collected in the WHO dashboard on Global Experiences in Promoting Refugee and Migrant Health.

Structured around the six key priorities of the GAP: short- and long-term interventions; continuity of care; policy integration; social determinants and universal health coverage (UHC); information systems; and evidence-based communication, the report highlights the need for stronger leadership, sustained investment and better coordination to promote the health of refugees and migrants worldwide.

It also recommends the development of national action plans to implement the GAP, the strengthening of data and monitoring systems, the expansion of cross-sectoral partnerships, and greater inclusion of refugees and migrants in decision-making processes. These actions are considered central to achieving health equity, system resilience and global health security for all.

The Report is the result of extensive international collaboration and, as done for the Report on the Health of Refugees and Migrants in the WHO European Region (2018) and the first World Report on the Health of Migrants and Refugees (2022), it was produced with the scientific and financial support of the INMP, which is also the WHO Collaborating Centre for scientific evidence and capacity building on migrant health. The production of the document was also funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The document highlights the role of the INMP in the continuing education of healthcare professionals and transcultural mediators paving on the core curriculum specifically developed by the Institute in its capacity as the National Reference Centre for Transcultural Mediation in Healthcare.
