Community Dermatology Task Force Meeting
October 7, 2009
International Congress Centrum, Berlin
Introduction Terence Ryan, MD - UK
Community Dermatology concerns populations rather than individuals. It erequires data on prevalence and manpower. It trains community based workers to manage common problems of the skin. Its interventions are low cost and address the needs of those with few resources. These may be isolated communities, mobile communities, or those affected by strife or climate change.
These are two recently evolving Community Dermatology organizations that will inj the future decide how to collaborate or integrate.
As Chair of the task force I will focus during the coming year on the need for funding. So far we have focused on the case of need.
In the coming year we will focus on impressing potential funders that we are doing a great job and have the capacity to solve the problems arising from the case of need.
The case of need illustrated by India. Dr. Shyam Verma, MBBS, DV&D, India
One billion people. The nation with the largest number of poor. Unlike Europe or the USA we have the burdens of tropical disease, drought and malnutrition.
We have several Systems of Medicine each needing to improve their training and practice as well as reduce the burden of their ineffective remedies.
Skin care needs to make the most of India’s inherent community allegiance and the knowledgeable work force must be greatly enlarged to meet the burden of disease and to work at the village level.
Creating solutions addressing the needs of Mobile populations. Aldo Morrone, MD – Italy/Ethiopia
Having identified the needs of mobile populations leaving other lands to crowd into Rome, we have created a system to meet those needs. To further enlighten our curriculum we have gained experience in Ethiopia how best to manage the prevailing skin diseases.
