From 5 to 12 August, Prof. Aldo Morrone, NIHMP Director General, and some of his collaborators carried out a new mission in Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa, Prof. Morrone met the new Ambassador of the Italian Republic for Ethiopia and Djibouti, his Majesty Renzo Rosso. They discussed about the ongoing clinical and scientific activities in Tigray and of the next International Congress Dermatological Care for All: Awareness and ResponsAbility that will be held in Addis Ababa and Mekelle. The opening session of the Congress, which is supported by the Italian Embassy, will be held in the Italian Institute of Culture.
In Mekelle, Prof. Morrone received Prof. Bernard Naafs, one of the major world experts in skin diseases, who has a 10-years experience in different African countries and who volunteered to spend one month carrying out medical examinations at the Italian Dermatological Centre of the Ayder University Hospital, created and supported by the NIHMP.
Prof. Ben Naafs and the Director General of the NIHMP visited some inpatient women and met the staff of the Paediatric and Maternity Ward of the Civil Hospital in Adigrat. The Ward was financed by the same Italian donor who will donate funds for the creation of the first hospital in Sheraro, an area of the Tigray region where people do not have access to qualified medical services. The NIHMP will provide clinical and scientific support to this new hospital.
Prof. Morrone also met Dr. Gebreab, Director of the Tigray Health Bureau. They talked about the future initiatives of AGHI (African Global Health Institute). Minister Gebreab also announced the opening of a Master for Health Officers on infectious, paediatric and gynaecological diseases. The Master is supported by the NIHMP and doctors and experts from the Institute will participate in the training.
