Prevention and Control of Female Genital Mutilations
The training course on “Prevention and control of Female Genital Mutilations” provided by the Integrated Training Project for Promoting Migrants’ Health, Preventing and Combating Female Genital Mutilations will start on 15 May 2010 at the Viterbo Local Health Service. The project is carried out by the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty-NIHMP with the support of Regione Lazio.
About 500 health care professionals from the whole region will participate in the training course, among them: doctors working for the National Health Service, specialised doctors, general practitioners, nurses, midwives, cultural mediators, psychologists, social workers, medical directors and educators.
The training will take place in the following Local Health Services (ASL):
The course lasts 5 months (twice a month for each site, 32 total training hours), it provides nine training sessions. Eight CME accredited sessions will take place in the prticipant Local Health Service, the last one will be held on 12 July in Rome, at the NIHMP.
The training provides a theory part and practical activities (exercises, debates, simulations and case studies) aimed at acquiring flexible competences to be used in practice. A systemic approach, combining specific information and transversal competences such as communication, cultural integration and child protection, will be adopted.
The main objective of the action is to prevent, control and eradicate Female Genital Mutilations (FGM) by providing health care professionals with specialised training and updating. In particular, the course aims at:
- Analysing the existing inequalities in the access to health care services
- Facilitating the access to health care services
- Informing migrant families on the local health care services available in the region, their territorial disposition and the modalities of access
- Studying the health risks due to FGM
