General Practitioners and Migration Medicine – CME training course
The CME training course “The General Practitioner and Migration Medicine” will be held on Saturday 18 February and 3 March 2012 at the NIHMP headquarters in Rome.
Millions of people with different skin colours, cultures, traditions and health-related conceptions are continuously moving across the world.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines as migrants a wide range of people who move for different reasons, including asylum seekers, migrant workers, travellers and tourists. According to WHO data, more than one billion people left their countries in 2010.
From a medical perspective, migration has always characterised and changed the human history. As a consequence of mobility, some diseases which had disappeared in our part of the world are being observed again. Today, geographical and medical boundaries no longer exist, and some diseases are observed almost all over the world.
General Practitioners have always been committed to facing public health emergencies, and now more than ever they deal with an ever-growing number of migrants registered with the National Health System (NHS) in accordance with the regulations in force.
Migrants are likely to include vulnerable categories such as asylum seekers and women with Female Genital Modifications. This new scenario implies the need for refreshment courses enabling General Practitioners to perform accurate and complex clinical examinations considering the particular characteristics of people from other cultures. Indeed, if those characteristics are mainly observed in specific geographical areas today, the number of patients with different skin colours and belonging to other cultures is remarkably increasing.
We would like to highlight the importance of strengthening the skills of General Practitioners since we are convinced of their pivotal role in protecting and controlling public health.
