14th International Workshop "Culture, Health, and Migration"

26 - 29 November 2007
National Research Council (CNR)
Piazzale Aldo Moro 7, Rome

XIV Workshop - locandina

The dragonfly’s eyes give the 360 degree visual field. In today’s world, where different cultures, languages and needs often live side by side and clash without trying to understand each other, it is necessary to promote the capacity to look around and far, in order to extend horizons, perceive needs, develop relations, share knowledge, resources and passion. It is important to get a circular and telescopic view to catch our wide, multiform and changing reality and put into effect observations, good intentions and proclamations. We must be able to really communicate, to reveal problems and difficult truths in a constructive perspective. These are the objective of the workshop. NIHMP is involved in the promotion of the health care; its twenty-year experience showed that before treating the disease it is important to receive people, to look at them and listen to them in order to find together, without conceit, the answers to their needs.
Since 1985 NIHMP is involved in transcultural medicine, migration, scientific research, treatment and monitoring of the diseases affecting people at risk of social exclusion. It was a will of the Ministry of Health to convert the Department of Preventive Medicine of Migration, Tourism and Tropical Dermatology in the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP).
In order to implement its numerous projects the Institute cooperates with the Province, the Region, the Municipality of Rome, several Ministries, Universities, national and international Organizations and IISMAS (Institute Social, Medical and Anthropological Sciences).
The workshop dealt with dermatology, health risk factors, work, nutrition, human rights, and many other topics. Doctors, nurses, psychologists, health workers, anthropologists, sociologists and representatives of public authorities, school, voluntary organizations, local administrations, Italian and foreign scientific institutions and societies took part in the event.
