About the Conference
Anthropology, culture, medicine and literature meet in Trastevere, Rome, within the historical framework of the ancient San Gallicano Hospital, established in 1725, to identify the main traits of a new idea of humanism that is rising in the Europe of migrations and post-colonialism.
When dealing with culture, and particularly literature, migrants can preserve their cultural heritage and hand it on to their new environment, making it possible to go beyond mere clinical profiles.
This is the approach characterising the activity of the NIHMP that, in the framework of its institutional mission, experiments new intervention models focusing both on social and health matters and on the idea of migrant conceived as person rich in values and traditions, who contributes to the cultural development of the hosting environment.
The Conference, organised by the NIHMP, the University of Innsbruck and the University of Bucharest, wishes to contribute in the analysis of the effects of migration in Europe seen from the point of view of its culture, particularly literature, but also from the perspective of medical science and sociology, for redefining the concept of humanitas.
The event has the objective to create a network of international specialists in different disciplines of study committed with the cultural, anthropological and medical aspects of migration. It also aims at promoting the interdisciplinary approach as a scientific methodology to deal with the impact of migration on cultural globalisms.
By taking into consideration the point of view of literature and arts, the conference particularly aims at widening reference and identification parameters for the idea of “migrant” in order to support medical, social and humanitarian assistance.
The cultural representation of the condition of migrant is strictly connected with the ongoing debate on European identity. Indeed, the European culture cannot be separated nor from the influence of historical migration inflows or from the centripetal force it exerts nowadays on migration flows.
Through the organisation of a Conference open to everybody (call for papers) and the publication of its acts, organisers also wish to stimulate young researchers to work on the cultural and scientific change produced by the discussed themes.
Expected results of the event are, besides the acts of the Conference. multimedia and documentary materials and a discussion forum on future initiatives and on social effects.
Other results will be international scientific collaborations, the promotion of a multidisciplinary scientific team and the collaboration of young specialists, of the interaction between experts, researchers, civil society and institutions also involving students and volunteers.
