NIHMP-ISD Workshop "Dermatology and Mobile Communities: a Two-way Exchange"
At NIHMP-San Gallicano Hospital Rome, 24-25 March 2011
The Workshop “Dermatology and Mobile Communities: a Two-way Exchange”, organised by the NIHMP and the International Society of Dermatology, will be held on 24-25 March 2011 at the Anatomical Theatre of the NIHMP (via di S. Gallicano 25/a, Rome).
A group of prominent medical doctors working with migrants in Europe, Africa and the United States will meet at NIHMP-San Gallicano Hospital to examine issues which, in a world where close contacts and exchanges are more and more frequent, represent unavoidable challenges in the daily medical tasks. The protection of the migrants’ health is of particular importance also for the hosting communities. Examples of good practices carried out in different national contexts will be discussed as well as guidelines for medical activities.
Three main points will be developed
I. Access to health care services for migrant communities. How to overcome the main barriers (legal, linguistic, culture-related) in order to ensure adequate standards of physical and mental health, particularly of the most vulnerable population groups.
II. Spectrum and prevalence of the mobile populations’ skin diseases in the experts’ countries.
III. Training, updating and fostering skills and knowledge of the dermatologists practising in Europe, in order to be able to meet the needs of migrant communities. In a transdisciplinary vision of dermatology and general medicine, the importance will be considered of carefully approaching the real demands of the persons, taking into account all the conditions (physical, emotional, psychological, environmental) in which the mobile communities live in the hosting countries. In a global perspective, how experience and know-how of skin diseases in one area of the world can benefit other countries.
