Conference on "European Scientific Network on Health, Migrants and Poverty"

This is the second Announcement of the Conference on an European Scientific Network on Health, Migrants and Poverty, organized by NIHMP, in cooperation with the European Commission – Directorate General for Health and Consumers and the Italian Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Policy.
The main aim of the Conference is to discuss the establishment, through a collaboration among EU
Member States, of an “ European Scientific Network on Health, Migrants and Poverty ”.
The Network is intended to provide a unique opportunity to share information and experiences on a
number of different subjects, among which, in particular:
- Best approaches in all policies to promote health of migrants and socio-economically disadvantaged population groups in different Member States;
- Information on specialised structures competent in different countries for providing health care to migrants and socio-economically disadvantaged population groups;
- Diagnostic and treatment protocols for some migrants’ diseases which are generally poorly known in European Countries;
- Tools and modules for distance training of different professionals charged with care of migrants and socio-economically disadvantaged population groups;
- Data concerning the migrants’ presence in different Member States and their characteristics;
- Mapping and wide diffusion of all EU Public Health Programme and WHO initiatives in the field of Migration and Health as well as in the field of socio-economically disadvantaged population groups;
- Establishment of a common data base of the available “communication and information” materials concerning migrants and socio-economically disadvantaged population groups in different Member States;
- Increase the knowledge of differences in health problems and approaches to tackle these differences;
- Further clarify issue regarding ethnic differences in health and health care.
The Network could also be open to the participation as observers of experts from Third Countries.
Ministries of Health, or other Competent Authorities for health of migrants and socio-economically disadvantaged population groups, of all the EU Member States are invited to designate two participants in the Conference (e.g. from the competent Ministry, a National Scientific Institution or other academic scientific institution). The National Institute of Health, Migrants and Poverty (NIHMP) will be pleased of covering expenditures, while in Rome, for the designated delegates.
The main outcome of the Conference is expected to be a set of conclusions and recommendations on the usefulness and optimal structure and contents of the “ European Scientific Network on Health, Migrants and Poverty ”.
The Conference will start on 24 November 2008 in Rome at h.1 p.m. and will continue until 6 p.m..
The meeting will continue on the 25 November 2008 starting at 9.30 and closing at 6 p.m. and will be completed on the 26 November, starting at 9.30 and closing at 1 p.m. A gala dinner will be offered in the evening of the second day.
In order to facilitate consensus building process during the Conference a background paper is being prepared through and will be circulated before the Conference.
As far the organization of the Conference is concerned:
- the afternoon session on 24 November 2008 will be a scientific/technical Session entirely devoted to the opening Session, an expert panel and an interview round on exchange of information on National Policies concerning health, migrants, and poverty.
- The morning of day 25 November will be devoted to working groups to discuss core activities of the Network and reporting back to plenary with the presentation by a designated rapporteur for each group.
- the afternoon of day 25 November will be devoted to a round table discussion followed by questions and answers with the audience as well as to working groups to discuss network governance mechanisms, working methods and resources sharing and reporting back to plenary with the presentation by a designated rapporteur for each group.
- the morning of day 26 will be November will be utilized to close the technical part of the meeting and to summarise next steps. A series of high level speeches focusing on migrations, health and poverty with possible emphasis on migrants health issues in integration strategies will follow until the close of the meeting at 1 p.m.
