First Course of Teledermatology for First-Level Health Professionals

On 19 February, the First Course of Teledermatology for First-Level Health Professionals was held in Chilpancingo, in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. It was organised by Secreteria de Salud del Estado de Guerrero, Dermatologia Comunitaria A.C., Latino América Telederm and Clic Diagnostics.

Prof. Aldo Morrone, NIHMP Director General and international medicine expert, and Dr Miriam Castaldo, anthropologist at NIHMP, took part in the event showing the multidisciplinary health care model proposed and carried out by NIHMP.

Objective of the Course of Teledermatology

The objective of the course is to train first-level health care professionals working isolated, rural and marginalised urban areas to use telemedicine tools. In this way, they will be able to

These tools will allow them to ask the consultation of dermatologists working in Acapulco for the cases requiring in-depth analysis or special treatments. If needed they will be also allowed to access the specialised network provided by Latino-América Telederm and Clic Diagnostics.

The teleconsultation system will extend territorial coverage, improve efficacy and increase the offer of health care services to those population groups which are traditionally excluded.

During their visit, Prof. Morrone and Dr Castaldo also participated in the Programa de adiestramiento en dermatología básica para pasantes y personal de salud en el primer nivel de atención, which took place in the Auditorium of the Hipocrates Institute of Advanced Medical Technology, in Chilapa on 18 February 2010.

Prof. Morrone, Dr Chavez, Dr Estrada and Dr Prove carried out an intense Community Dermatology activity for the Nahua community of Atzacoaloya.
