Gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate, or the integrity of our public officials. It measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile […]” (Robert Kennedy)

PRESENTATION
The eradication of poverty is the fundamental requirement for creating a fair and united society: to guarantee each human being the right to live a decent life and to be included in his community is an advantage for everyone.
2010 will be the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Besides carrying out concrete actions aimed at reducing poverty, it will be necessary to find out new referral points, to think about the possibility that development could not necessarily reside in the increase of consumption.
Health considered as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, is the basis for rethinking development. Medicine itself, by conforming to the logic of profit and forgetting the importance of life and health, seems to foster diagnostic, pharmacological and therapeutic consumerism excluding from health care those who mostly need it. Today, 80% of the world population does not have access to prevention and to the available treatments.
During its 30 years of activity, San Gallicano Hospital received and took care of disadvantaged and marginalized people, created new health care models allowing easier access to services, reduced costs and avoidance of useless laboratory tests. NIHMP is now working to develop this scientific, clinical, research and training commitment.
Aware of the interdependency of human beings, we are convinced that the best way to combat fear is knowledge. Knowing the others is the only way to discover that borders are not dividing lines but meeting points where the “challenge” is difficult and real. Difficult but fascinating.
The Workshop will deal with the above mentioned themes form a multidisciplinary point of view, thanks to the participation of researchers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, anthropologists, sociologists, teachers, representatives of governmental institutions, school, voluntary organizations, local authorities, Italian and foreign scientific institutions and societies.

The workshop is MCE accredited.
